Jesus and Linux

As I was working on my thesis (Open Source Software in the Classroom), a very geeky thought occurred to me.  While I will spare my readership on the ins and outs of the open source movement, it suffices to say that Linux is perhaps the greatest child of the open source movement.  Linux is an operating system, much like Windows and Apple -insert animal name-.  They instruct your computer on how to run.

At the very core of Linux is a kernel.  That kernel has been built upon, modified, and redistributed in over 20 different versions (see here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_Linux_distributions).  These distributions each have their own unique purposes, but are essentially the same at the core level.

If Jesus were  administrating the Church using an operating system, I am pretty sure that it would be Linux. At our very core, we (Methodist, Baptist, Catholic, Orthodox, etc.) share the very same kernel.  While we are not always compatible, we are still the same distribution with a different flavor.

so here’s your morning devo to all your geeks out there!

  1. You know, this may not be worth mentioning, but you really need to stop saying that you are writing a thesis. You are writing a handbook/manual/paper for a capstone. It is not a thesis.

You might start making people angry — or they might start thinking that you’re an “expert” or something : )

  2. You need to love that Dann.

I love how the Holy Spirit teaches and speaks to us no matter what we are doing. Actually changing my areas of expertise just offers him new word pictures use with me. Just when I think I’m in over my head…He begins to teach and speak. That is happening right now with drywall and paint and fatigue. The longer the task, the stronger the fatigue, the more he speaks. He teaching voice urges me on better than any cheerleading I’ve ever known, and I’ve had some good ones! He is teaching…cheering you on, stimulating your mind, energizing your passions. So amazing, isn’t it?

  3. Dann - You should get over you academic elitism. My capstone course adviser called it a “thesis” and is putting together a panel for my “defense.” If you weren’t one my best friends, I would probably kick you in the shin. With love of course.

  4. Maggie - Yes. I am constantly hearing God’s voice through every day circumstances. I love that He is that personal.

  5. Kevin — you know me far too well to think that I’d back any kind of academic elitism — I’m just letting you know because others might care (which is what I said in my comment). Anyway, it was just a thought. In person, you can explain the difference between what you’re doing and a thesis — online might be a different story.

  6. Who cares what it is called…you should just be proud of your accomplishments!!! Love ya bunches!

  7. Danielle - You’re too sweet. We love you too!

  8. psst… it’s Friday…

  9. kevin….your posts only get more interesting….here’s one for your Fantastic Fridays….Greenis.us . It’s a site for asking an opinion…almost like an opinionated twitter……

  10. Gosh Dann, I’m so glad that you saved an unsuspecting reader from the confusion of an ‘actual thesis’ and what Kevin is doing. Too bad I’m so uneducated that I just can’t seem to grasp the difference.
